HDMI connection issue

I have a Dell Studio 1737 with an HDMI port and a Sanyo LCD TV.  In the past I was able to connect an HDMI cable directly from my laptop to my tv and clone the desktop (which is useful when streaming netflix).  However, recently they just don't seem to be connecting any more and I'm not doing anything differently.  My tv is giving me a "no signal" message, although the Dell definitely knows it's connected.  This is extremely frustrating and I've tried everything I can think of!

Also, I don't know what this means, but when I go into display settings, it refers to both screens (my laptop monitor AND my tv) as "Generic PnP Monitors".

I would really appreciate any help.

Thanks.

So basically there are a number of variables that could be causing the problem: the TV, or the way that the TV is configured,  the HDMI cable may be defective, and on the notebook it could be the video adapter / driver.

First, If you have not already done so I suggest making sure that there has been no changes to the TV setup, and make sure that it is configured to accept a signal from the notebook.

Try another HDMI cable.

Once you verify that the TV is configured and working correctly and that the HDMI cable works then start looking to the notebook as the problem.

Turn off both the TV and the notebook and disconnect the HDMI cable. Start the notebook and once in Windows connect the HDMI cable to the notebook and TV. Crank up the TV and see if you get an image from the notebook.  If you are using Windows 7 bring up Windows Mobility and look for displays or press FN and F8 together. Choose Duplicate or Extend and see if it helps.

If that fails I suggest reinstalling the video drivers.  Please be sure to completely remove the original drivers, uninstalling from Programs and Features (add remove programs) before reinstalling the drivers.

If that fails you may consider performing a PC restore or even a manual reinstall.  For more info on reimaging the system please check out the following link

If that fails then you may need to consider having the system board replaced.
