Heat Concerns

Hello,

For the most part I don't do any heavy applications, today however, I was copying a CD with iTunes to my library, and playing another song at the same time. Eventually the laptop got so hot I could not touch it. There is no heat from the LCD display as I use an external monitor. The CD/DVD drive is a 24x CD-R/RW/DVD-ROM drive. Should my computer get this hot? Is there any programs that I can monitor my computer's temperature with?

Thank you,
Betta

first off, what kind of computer do you have?   secondly, no, it should not be too hot to touch.  you can try to monitor temps with this program:  http://www.diefer.de/i8kfan/index.html  ...  it may or may not work depending on your system and bios revision.

general advice: make sure all vents are clear and clean -- don't block things that need airflow.  don't put the notebook on your lap or other soft surface

Thanks for the info. I recently updated all my bios and software. I can't remember what my bios are, but they are probably the most recent version. My computer is an Inspirion 1150. My computer sits on my desk and has plenty of airflow. It only gets this hot when I'm copying a CD to my library, but I still do not want my computer to melt or anything like that. Also that program is not compatible as it is for the 8x00 series of dell note books.

it will work fine for your notebook, assuming you have a bios higher than A22

Okay, I was thinking of buying one of those cooling pads, but I'm worried about air flow conflicts. Which is the intake and which is the outtake on my notebook? Also, I would prefer getting a program that simply monitors, not changes, my fan speed and heat of my processor.

it won't make changes unless you tell it too ...  i usually keep it observer mode unless I need more fans, for gaming for instance
