Help: Enable Turbo Boost on Windows 7 Ultimate
Hi guys, I need your help, this is the CPU-Z screenshot of my system (Alienware m17x R3) a few months ago:
As you can see, the Core Speed is up to 3278.67 MHz with Turbo Boost enabled.
A few days ago, my computer messed up and I need to reinstall the OS and drivers. While downloading drivers from dell's website, I saw a BIOS Update (A12) which is in "recommended" status. So before I reinstall my OS I update my bios from A08 to A12.
After all the setup and such, this is the CPU-Z screen shot now :(
as you can see, the Core Speed after fresh OS install is only at 797.38 even though Turbo Boost is enabled on the BIOS. I search the net for whole day and to no avail.
Guys, I need your help in fixing my system's turbo boost.
Thanks in advanced ^_^

Check the BIOS setup - is the AC adapter properly identified or is it listed as "unknown"?
F2 at powerup.

Hi Paul, my bios does not have the "AC Adapter Type" and I can't change the clock multiplier :(

No, it's just that some people install it and apply some custom fan settings that can affect CPU performance. If you haven't installed it, then don't worry.
Did you check for the adpater info as requested by Ejn63, it should be on the first page under the MAIN section
Also check for these settings in BIOS
You might even have to downgrade your BIOS to the previous version.

Try it in Balanced mode. There may be a fan setting in High Performance mode that's throttling back the CPU.
Do you have HWiNFO installed and have changed the custom fan settings?

Hi Paul,
Just did that "Balanced Mode" and nothing happens.
Nope, I'm not familiar with HWiNFO, do I need to install it?

It was disabled:
But enabling it looks like this:

Thanks for all those,
Well it seems that the new BIOS update has locked your CPU at the incorrect speed. You have a few options.
You can re-flash to the previous BIOS release
You can change the clock frequency (enable "Override Turbo Settings" also)
You can use a modded BIOS + Throttlestop - NOTE: This is at your own risk. Read the link below for some guidance.

Before you do anything I'd post this query to the Alienware forum also, the users in there may have a better solution. Good luck!

Glad it's sorted. Where did you find the solution?
Might be a good idea to post this to the Alienware community forum so others can benefit.

UPDATE:
I fixed the Turbo Boost :D
Here is the steps I made, this is for those who encounter the same problem as mine :)
1.) Reflash the BIOS (I use the A12 again).
2.) Turn off the Alienware.
3.) Remove the battery and the bottom cover, there is only two screw to remove.
4.) Remove the small cmos battery and let the laptop sits for about 5-10min
5.) Put back the cmos battery.
6.) Put back the laptop bottom cover and the battery.
7.) Turn On the laptop, you hear beep sounds continuously, then turn off the laptop again by pressing the power button for about 5-10 seconds.
8.) Turn On the laptop again, it will turn on but then automatically turn off again.
9.) Turn On the laptop again, this time it will turn on and you need to press the F2 button to setup things in the BIOS.
10.) Save bios setting and restart :)
Yep it works now :D
Anyway thanks for the tips guys ^_^

Hi Paul,
I just remember a few years back when troubleshooting a PC when something goes wrong I usually reset the CMOS but then there is no cmos reset jumper on the alienware so I remove the cmos battery and let it sit for 5-10 min hoping it will work (cross fingers) and yes it works :D
