Help with a line in problem
I have a e1705 Inspiron about 5 years old running XP Pro. My grandson was poking a toy in the ports and now I have no sound. When I login SIGMATel audio tells me there is something in the black jack right panel. There is nothing in the panel, is there a way to disable it?

That is the mic/line-in jack, right.
Try reinstalling the audio driver.
Insert a plug or a q-tip into the jack and gently probe and wiggle in an attempt to restore functionality.
If neither of those help then let me know and I can refer you to a way to modify the audio driver that might give you more control over the jacks. However if there is physical damage then I don't believe there is a software fix. In that case you can use an external audio interface to replace the line-in jack.

further regarding my problem. The jack is completely separated from the motherboard. I doubt it is repairable. So the question is, where do I go from here? My only desire is sound.

Well if you don't mind using headphones or external speakers then you could get a simple usn audio interface that will replace the internal audio system of the computer (meaning that the everything will work except the internal speakers).
If you need to have the internal speakers working then there are a couple of ways that might work.

Somebody else with an E1705 with XP was able to install an audio driver from Toshiba (driver qg600audiox from the Toshiba Qosmio G35-AV600) that bypasses the pins. You lose the functionality of both mic and output jacks, but the speakers work again. You need to google to find the driver.

If that doesn't work let me know. I have another suggestion that is a little more complicated.
