Help with memory upgrade

What is the difference between 256MB DDR 400MHz and 256MB DDR 266 MHz? The reason I need to know this is because my Inspiron 9100 laptop comes with a 256MB DDR 400MHz and my old computer which is a regular desktop has a 256MB DDR 266MHz. Can I use the card from my old computer? Will It mess anything up?

Thanks Alot....

If you used your old computer's memory in your faster, newer computer; your newer computer will run at 266MHz instead of at 400MHz.  Buy memory of the same speed when upgrading.  The same is true going the other way around, let's say your motherboard could handle 500MHz memory sticks and you left 1 stick of 400MHz memory on your system, your machine would be running at 400MHz not 500MHz.

desktop memory is different than laptop memory.  desktop is DIMM, laptop is SODIMM so your desktop memory wouldn't fit in your laptop.  I have a 9100 as well.  for the 9100, you should get 2 modules of the same size so you can take advantage of the dual channel capability. it will run way faster with two of the same instead of two different.
