How to switch in between graphics

I ordered a laptop and it said that it had a NIVIDIA 650m graphics card and that it uses the Intel HD 4000 graphics when I am not doing something very demanding but it will auto switch to NIVIDIA when I do something like gaming where the graphics card will be needed. Is there a way to manually switch to using the NIVIDIA?

Hi KoolKid,

Sorry for delayed reply.

Some programs have built in uninstallers which are located in the directory the program is installed.

Also, some programs are portable and do not require to be uninstalled from control panel.

Hope it helps.

Thanks & Regards

Hi KoolKid,

Welcome to the Community.

Right-click on Desktop and select Nvidia Control Panel.

Select Manage 3D applications.

Select Program Settings and you may add the application you want should use Nvidia Graphics.

Select preferred graphics processor for the program as High Performance Nvidia Processor.

Thanks & Regards

Or if you change settings on the Globar Settings card of the NVIDIA Control Panel, you can set GeForce to work all the time.

Hi KoolKid,

Once you select High Performance Nvidia Processor for an application using "Manage 3D applications" feature in Nvidia Control Panel it will not use Intel Graphics and will run the application using Nvidia Graphics.

NVIDIA PhysX technology improves the graphics of games.

NVIDIA PhysX doesn't improve the graphics of the game but their physics. It's pretty clear from the name of the feature I think. It redirect computing the physical effects like breaking the glass and flying peaces of of paper on the ground (for example Batman: Arkham City) from the processor to the graphic card which has more performance to do this.

Originaly this technology was offered only through special dedicated PhysX card, I think the company name was Aegea. But the idea of separate physical acceleration card was abandoned when NVIDIA bought this company and worked the engine into their graphic cards. Until than you can calculate physics in game with graphic card instead of CPU.

cool thanks and also I was going to play a game but it said it required Physx even through I had it. After looking into it some more i found out that I needed a version from earlier on. Will this mess up my performance to other games? Heres the link,  www.nvidia.com/.../physx-9.12.1031-legacy-driver.html

Hi KoolKid,

You may try installing this version of PhysX if it is required by the game however, installing the latest version should also fix the issue.

Thanks for the reply however the problem is that I already have the newest version of PhysX and I am worried that downloading this older version to play this MMO game will ruin how well my computer runs other more demanding games or programs.

Hi KoolKid,

Try installing the PhysX version required by the game. If the game still does not run, it might not be issue with the PhysX.

If the game runs fine, check if the performance with other game is impacted.

Hi KoolKid,

You may try installing the software to run the game. PhysX legacy is same as PhysX but is used for games released around the end of 2007.

Thanks & Regards
