Hyperthreading...

I have a inspiron 5150
3.06 ghz, a38 bios, 2gig ram, dvd/cdrw
Now...both my system utility tools (advanced system optimizer and tuneup) say that my processor supports hyperthreading. but when i goto install a hyperthreading (mobile pentium 4)driver i get the message "this computer does not support this operating system". I use Windows XP Pro build 2600 w/ SP2.Any ideas?

Hyperthreading, if indeed your CPU is capable of it (some of the P4 3.06 were not) must be enabled in the bios first. Check in the "system" properties - control panel, device manager. If you have hyper-threading it will show you having two processors.

how do i enable it my bios?i dont see an option...maybe because the driver wont install. besides when i upgraded my bios to a38. several options became locked.

is HT not working currently (without the update?)  when you press control alt delete and click on performance, how many CPUs do you see?

You would have had to purchase the notebook specifically with hyper-threading in order for it to work. That was at the CPU level I think. There was a bios flash that enabled it - I think it was a24 - you are way beyond that. If you don't see anything in your bios for it and the software download won't execute, and you see only one CPU in your system devices, I'm 99% sure you don't and /or can't have hyper-threading on that machine with that chipset and CPU. The change to hyper-threading came about during the life of the 5150's so there were both flavors sold.

If the option isn't there in BIOS setup, the CPU does not support it.

The 3.06 mobile was available in HT and non-HT formats (unlike the 3.06 desktop P4, all of which were HT).
