Are you sure that the system is IBM? Give us some more information on the system for us to try to assist you with this. Pictures of the system  if you can.

Yes, It is am IBM Model 5160, their first was called IBM PC, this model 5160 was their second. Production date was 1983, This Uses the MS-DOS Operating system, and the Book that came with it say MS-DOS operating system, Basic Lanague, Windows v3.1 The book is about 2 inches thick. I got the Model # from the back of the desktop unit. The monitor sits on the desktop unit.

That is about all I can tell you, except the one disk bay on it is for the 5" disk. I got a lot of blanks with it but the friend could not find the Wins v3.1 disk. He says Win 3.1 is on it but it always boots to a screen wanting you to enter date and time. He is elderly and has forgetton any keys or F keys.

That is about it. Thanks agfor any help

scbeach,

Thank you for using the Dell Community Forum.

If the system boots to what sounds like the BIOS screen and asks for you to input the date and the time the problem is most likely to be that the CMOS battery in the system is dead. After you enter the date and time can you then boot the system to windows?

Thanks Les.  After I get the date and time in(which won't acept any date past 1983)
I then get the following Prompt:     C:\>

I have tried to put in win, etc but it gives me invalid command.

IBM Model 5160 Specifications:
4.77 Mhz Intel 8088
Maximum RAM 640K (if you break out your soldering iron and add a few components)
CGA Graphics
Optional 10MB or 20MB Harddrive

Windows 3.1 System Requirments
80386 or higher processor
2MB + RAM
VGA Graphics
8MB Hard disk drive space

Have fun trying to run Windows on this relic. I think you are probably limited to DOS, although there are some sketchy, poorly documented accounts of running Windows 3.1 on these machines. If want to run newer software on this machine you might take a look at software aimed at the embedded market. You might have luck with freedos, qnx, or an embedded version of linux.
