Inspiron 1501 boot problems

Hi all,

I have just been given an Inspiron 1501 to get working again, but it has stumped me.

It boots up okay, but when it gets to the Windows load page, it restarts itself.

I have been through the forums and tried the f2, f8 and f12 routines as advised, but the option to "Repair your Computer" never appears.

Is there anyway I can rescue this machine?

Failing that, I did manage to get access via an Ubuntu Live Cd, does anyone know if I can copy the photos etc off the computer through the Live CD?

Thanks

A

Hi Baxiemac,

Welcome to the Community. I first suggest you run a Diagnostics on your computer. Press the F12 key at the Dell logo on startup, select diagnostics, and run an extended diags on your hard drive. Post back with any error codes. If the diags pass, what options do you get when you tap the F8 key?

Thank you

Hi Baxiemac,

If you have the OS disc that came with the computer, you can use that disc to do a system restore to a date when it was working fine. Below is the link. If you are unable to do a system restore, then you are left with manually reinstalling the OS, which will wipe out everthing of your computer.

Hi, thanks for getting back to me,

Pressing f2 takes me into the bios.

f8 brings up the choice to boot in safe mode etc

f12 brings up the boot menu - a choice of Hard disk, usb stroage, cd-rom drive, removable devices, broadcom PXE and Diagnostics.

I ran the diagnostics and it came back as there being no problem.  It also asked if I wanted to do an extended rest which would take up to 1/2 hour.  I clicked OK and a while later it came up with -

"Pre-boot System Assessment Complete.  No Diagnostic Utility Partition identified."

And that it all it does, it goes straight back to booting to the windows load screen then rebooting again.

Thanks again Royan.  Unfortunately I don't have any disks.  Does this mean the machine in "unfixable" or is there some way I can get it operating again?

Hi Baxiemac,

If you are in the US, you can use the below link to reguest for the OS disc. If your from any other country you will need to call Dell Technical support in your region to request for one.
