Inspiron 1545 Additional Memory Issue

I have an Inspiron 1545 laptop (Windows 7) that only came with 2GB RAM.  Dell just sold me a Kingston 2GB DDR2 and I installed it.  However, my laptop does not recognize the additional memory.  I tried the new memory in the old slot (with nothing in the 2nd slot) and the computer recognized it, but it doesn't recognize either the new or old one in the second slot.  Any suggestions?  Do they have to be the same brand?  Any thoughts on why the computer doesn't recognize all 4 GB?

Hi smboud,

Inspiron 1545 supports memory up to 4GB.

Remove the memory from the first slot and place the old memory in the second slot and check if the computer boots.

This could be an issue with the bad slot on the motherboard.

If the Old memory and the new memory works in the first slot check both the memories in the slot 2 (one at a time)as well.

Above steps should isolate the issue.

Picture below would explain the memory configuration for Inspiron 1545:

Neither memory works in the second slot, so that must be a bad slot.  Thank you for your help!

Hi smboud,

I would be glad to arrange for a service on the computer if the computer is under warranty.

I have added you as a friend. Please accept my friend request by clicking on my name highlighted in blue and then click on “Friends” tab at the top and then click on “Request to Review” and finally click on “Accept” button.

I am sending you a private message as well. Click on “Inbox” to respond to the message and provide system’s Service Tag and contact details so I may access your system records and check for further course of action. You could also click on Start Conversation to send a private message.

In case of expired warranty scenario, we would not be able to extend warranty entitled services.

If the warranty on the computer has expired, below link would help you in contacting expired warranty services (this is for US based customers):
