Inspiron 5100 problems...

In May of 2003 I bought an Inspiron 5100 and lately it's been really acting up. After it stopped working (when I booted it up fan and power LED would come on but nothing else) I sent it to a local tech. He couldn't figure out what was wrong...he reformatted the computer and I lost all 3,000 songs I had on there (which weren't backed up sadly :/ ) and it didn't fix anything. Then he tried new RAM, still didn't fix anything. A dell tech person said the motherboard was messed up and that it was the sockets for the RAM, but putting the computer near an air conditioner often fixes the problem so I think it's the heat thing many people have mentioned. What should i do!?

If you under warranty and beleive its a heat issue. Call dell and this will fix it. If your out of warranty. Buy a can of compressed air and spray into the vents with the system off (also do this before calling dell) As the 5100 is easy to take apart so you could go as per and giving it a thourough clean.

Have you tried cleaning the CPU housing (CPU cooling Fan etc).  To access the CPU housing you will have to remove the keyboard.  I believe the instructions to access the CPU are in your handbook if not have a look at http;//docs.us.dell.com/support/edocs/systems/ins5100/sm/index.htm.
