Inspiron 6000 Barebones

I do not like the pricing for memory with the inspiron 6000, nor do I like the options that Dell gives for hard drives (I want a 7200 rpm drive)... Since I plan on replacing both of those, is it possible to buy the system without Windows/A hard drive/RAM? The salesman said no, but I'm not sure how knowledgable he was...

It is not possible - you must get at least a minimum of RAM and a hard drive.

What about Windows? My school offers Windows XP Pro at the ridiculously low price of 15 dollars... Is it possible to get the laptop without XP Home or anything?

Probably for reasons similar to those that explain why you can't buy a new car without tires and wheels, even if you want to upgrade to your own choices later on.

That's too bad - Why is it dificult to simply not install things?

No.

Note that if you've plans to swap hardware (hard drives, etc.) regularly, or upgrade the RAM, you'll be better off getting the Dell XP Pro. The one your school offers will tie you into activation - more than one or two hardware changes will require you to reactivate.

The other BIG caveat with the 6000: if you have any gaming plans at all, DO NOT buy the base 6000 with Intel integrated graphics - it cannot be upgraded at all. There is currently no upgrade for the X300 in the higher-line 6000D, but there may be in the future.

Anything is high end compared to my computer now, so I didn't even bother to look into its capabilities. But thanks for the info. :-)

See, what I really wanted was your laptop, 2 gigs of ram (really expensive from dell, crucial.com is 270 dollars for both gigs) and the 60 gig 7200 rpm hard drive (not offered anymore, apparently). Alas, it is not to be.

If it's listed, you can get it.  If it's not, you cannot.  Supplies on 7200rpm are very tight.
