I just got my new Inspiron 6000 laptop microphone working today.  I changed the registry settings that have been listed on other posts and was still having a problem recording.  I moved the plug around and could hear some noise from the speakers.  Perhaps the plug that Dell uses for the mic is not standard and is preventing a good connection.   I am using a stereo mic that is plugged into a mono adapter.   If  I push the adapter all the way into the plug, the mic will not work.  I have to pull the adapter out of the plug about an 1/8 of an inch to make the connection.

That's what I've read.  Even the mono adapter I have, which, I believe, came from Radio Shack, isn't the right length for the Inspiron.   I didn't know there were various lengths but I have to do some more research on that.

The mono plugs that I have had for several years are 14mm long.  I assume this is a standard size but this size does not match the jack on my Inspiron 6000.  There are also 3.5mm OD plugs that can be 9.5mm long ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DC_plug) and are used for DC.  The 9.5mm is what I need to keep from having to pull the mic plug out 1/8 inch.  Are there also 9.5mm plugs that are considered standard for audio?  Will I need to specify the plug length when I buy my next mic?
