Since day 1 it has been like that! Everytime I turn on the MIC to use, the noise would be so loud with popping and hissing sound. When I disable that built-in audio to use the USB Creative card, the popping noise would be gone but the hissing sound still remain. It's so annoying :smileysad:
with that description looks like there is a problem with your audio card. becuase it just happen when you use the microphone. now i will suggest reloading the audio drivers to see if that make any difference. after that just run the dell diags and check that happen on the diags if so then call tech support probably they will try some more updates but we could be taking about replacing some hardware here. try reloading the audio drivers. probably they can tell you that you need to reinstall windows be prepare for that too.
I also seem to be having the same problem on my 700m. When I plug in my headset into the mic port, i get a loud background hiss accompanied with an occasional tapping. Usually, music plays out fine through both the laptop speakers and the headphone out port. I have tried other mics and got the same problem.
I searched the forums and noticed there is another thread about this same problem, http://forums.us.dell.com/supportforums/board/message?board.id=insp_audio&message.id=20063&query.id=127268#M20063
I have ended up using my regular desktop again for the headset until Dell comes up with a fix for it. I guess not to many people use the microphone port for it to have shown up on Dell's radar.
Go to volume properties in control panel, then go to the third tab (volume) and click on mic volume then the bar w/ mic volume will come up, (or u can get there from the volume button in system tray but this way is simpler to give directions) then go options >> profiles and check the other recording option. make sure that the one labeled "mic" is checked, and not the stereo mix one; u can only pick one at a time but yeah...if its on stero mix mine does that too but on mic it works fine. Okay i dont know if u've solved this already but just in case u havn't there it is.
I have a new 700m and experienced the static sound from mic. The problem was solved by turning off the "Microphone Boost" option. So far so good.. no more static.
This problem is not resolved. There is a design defect on all 700m motherboards that makes audio recording impossible. Just do a search on this forum or on google for the problem and you'll see that there are many different users complaining about this. Dell is doing nothing about it - these units should be recalled and fixed.
Can the problem of recording music be remedied thru the purchase of an aftermarket sound card? Could such a sound card be installed thru the pc card slot?
I have the same problem recording audio. I first noticed the problem from day 1, when there was no speaker icon in the system tray to adjust the volume. I then downloaded a music recording software and it specified that in order to use the software, I had to be signed in as administrator, which I was, and check my audio driver. Dell tech support told me to download the drivers on support.dell.com which obviously didn't resolve the problem. Is there no remedy for this solution?
Sorry.. I forgot to include the original message. I thought the fix was "turning off the 'Microphone Boost' option".... but then static from the mic came back during Skype/Sound Recording/etc. I returned my 700m already.
yeah i thought mine worked and posted taht if u turn off mic boost it works but found out a bit later that isn't the case, just makes it super low volume, unfortuneately being long out of my 21 day period dell customer care just sits there and plays like a broken record saying nothing can be done, if you're in ur 21 day period return it, if you're not get ready for dell to give you the runaroud til you give up. still trying to get them to even say something besides "sorry you're out of the return period and there's nothing we can do" or blaming my microphone even tho i tell them i've tried many different mics which all work on other computers but all don't on the 700m, so if you don't wanna go thru the above and can return i strongly you suggest you do so. If i get this issue cleared up then i'll change my opinion but til then avoid the 700m is all i can say, unless you don't need the mic port. The reason i need a mic port is to record lecture because i have transcription software/microsoft one note/bought a 80-90 dollar zoom microphone specifically for this reason which works perfectly on my desktop and other laptops just doesn't work on the 700m not in any that i've had which is three if you count motherboard replacement as a system) in tech specs for 700m they should either take out line-in/mic input as a spec or mention that it has no real functionality and is just there as a decoration.
