Inspiron 8500 Volume Control Button Functionality lacking after SP2

I just did a clean install of XP w/ SP1. I followed the Dell instructions as per the order of devices (system software, chipset, video card, sound card.... and then did the online upgrade to SP2. The volume buttons (I am speaking of the 3 audio-dedicated silver buttons to the left of the power button and LEDs) do not work at all for me. None of the three buttons cause anything at all to happen. As the OP said, the brightness functions still work for me when using Fn+ up and down. And volume control works fine when using Fn+ page up and page down and end. But the dedicated buttons do not do anything...is there a fix for this anywhere?

I don't know for sure whether it would have worked under SP1 because I forgot to try it before I downloaded the SP2 upgrade during my reinstall process.

illescasd,

Did you install the Dell Quickset software?

I have the Quickset drivers installed. In fact, I installed the latest version available from the Dell downloads.

mhargr03,

After you reinstalled the operating system, did you install any other 3rd party software, like DVD software or music software?
I ask, because if you have correctly installed Quickset, the problem could be that there is some software preventing the button’s functionality.
First of all, I would reinstall Quickset though.

illescasd,

Go to the file library on Dell’s support site and you can download this software.

I did just re-install Quickset, but no change, the three buttons still do not work. The only 3rd party audio/dvd program I have is Windows Media Player 10. However, I recall that I tried the buttons before installing any 3rd party software after my system restore (but after the upgrade to SP2) and they still didn't work. Is there a known issue of some 3rd party program interfering with the buttons' use?

Corey,

Is it possible there is an 'overide function' when upgrading to Windows Media Player v10, so as to overide the functional buttons on the side of the computer and coerce one to use the media player controls?
