I have the ATI Radoen x1400 256 mb with 2gb of ram, and for some strange reason, in counter strike 1.6 when a smoke gernade is thrown my FPS drops from 100 all the way to 15-20!!! Why is that?
Rendering the smoke effects probably taxes the graphics card. The x1400 isn't all that fast.
OK,lets get something straight, the X1400 is not a entry level card, its a Mid level gaming card..... Quake4, FEAR , Oblivion, all play fine on the X1400 at Medium settings,(I average 43FPS in FEAR at Medium settings) HalfLife 2 Episode 1 plays at Highest settings by default smoothly, Battlefield 2 will play just fine with the X1400, just make sure you up your RAM to 2Gig thus giving your system room to breath....My E1505 originally came with the X1300 and that is a entry level card, after my upgrade to the X1400 the difference was night and day in all aspects....so go with the X1400 and you will do just fine....
As far as I am concerned, the cards that Dell offers for the E1505 are Intel Graphics Media Accelerator 950, the Radeon X1300, and the Radeon X1400. I think the card you are talking about is the Nvidia 7900GS for the E1705 which is not compatible with the E1505. Sorry, but I wish Dell offered more graphics power for the E1505, like the X1600. But as said before, the X1400 should be able to play the games you previously mentioned.
Again, like previously mentioned, parts for laptops are very expensive, including a upgraded GPU.
Here, this might answer your question. On the notebookreview forums another person asked a question similar to yours, that is, can the X1400 be upgraded to a X1600: http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=78730
