Intel HD 4000 graphics increase memory
Hi,
I am planning to buy a Dell laptop. Many models with 3rd gen icore processors have Intel HD 4000 graphics. The maximum allocatable graphics that can be used from the RAM is ~1.7GB. But my vendor says that it is locked at 512Mb in the bios settings. This is too less as one never knows if 2-3 years from now 512Mb may be insufficient.
So i would like to know if i can specify 'maximum DVMT' in the bios settings. I will buy a laptop with at least 4Gb RAM and hence allocating ~1.7Gb dynamically should not be a problem for me.
I do not wish to spend any extra money on a dedicated graphics card and will not be playing any games.
Thanks.

No, you can't manually allocate video RAM. It's done dynamically by the system.

Hi,
I know that video memory allocation is done dynamically by the system. But many times the maximum limit of on board RAM that can be allocated for video graphics is fixed by the manufacturer as a bios setting.
My question is this: Intel HD 4000 graphics is capable of using upto ~1.7Gb of RAM for video graphics. If a lesser amount (say 512Mb) is permanently fixed (as a bios setting) by the manufacturer then it is a waste of resources.
For example, my desktop has a bios option for onboard graphics - 'maximum DVMT'. This ensures that all on board capability of graphics can be used and dynamically allocated.
Similarly can I specify, in my Dell laptop, a similar option in the bios? As I said specifying a maximum allocatable limit of 512Mb is a waste of resources.

There is no way to set the video RAM - one way or the other - manually. I've never seen a BIOS setting on any Dell system that caps the video RAM, either - it's Windows (and the video driver) that run the show.

I think I understand what you are saying here. To give you an example, my asus k55vd-db51 has 8gb with an ivy bridge i5-3210 processor. The pre-allocation dvmt is set to 64m and allows me to set it at 32, 64, 128, 256 and 512m. When I set it to 512 for the internal hd4000 on the ivy bridge, the windows 8 system avail ram states 7.45gb free off 8gb total. When I leave it at the default 64m value, it states 7.9 free so the amount of ram avail to the system should be a lower value so it can allocate to system ram. In your case, 512m hard coded set value does seem excessive. In both instances, the wei score is 5.7 for the hd4000 internal graphics processor so more ram pre-allocated has no value.
Just my 2 cents.
