Intel Rapid Storage Technology
I have a Precision M6700. So far as I can tell it only has 1 HDD and it is not an SSD and it is not in a RAID.
This computer came with Intel Rapid Storage Technology pre-installed.
I've always been afraid to do anything with it because I don't know what it is for but as I sit here it is using about 20% CPU and has been as long as I've had this computer.
Right now under Task Manager I see this:
IAStorDataSVC (32bit) 19.0% CPU
> Intel(R) Rapid Storage Technology
I cannot tell what it is doing.
If you try to open "Intel Rapid Storage Technology" in Control Panel, the first time you click the Icon nothing happens. If you wait, and click it again you get the error message "Multiple users cannot run the application at the same time." No one else is logged into this computer.
The help documentation says that there should be an system tray icon for this tool, but there is not.
What is this application? What is it doing? Can I remove it? If not, is there a newer version that works better?
Windows 10 Pro.

Check your system setup (F2 at powerup) -- is there a small capacity SSD showing there?

Hi ormico,
As advised by ejn63, restart the system and press f2 key to enter BIOS. On the main page, you would see the hard drives listed. The SSD would show up as MSata - Ideally this drive is used for acceleration and helps in caching for data for faster transmission. Although this is the technological description, you would not easily notice the difference unless you work on video editing / HD gaming.
Read more about Intel Rapid Storage - http://intel.ly/1zx4S1c - for a better understanding about the technology.
Furthermore, in BIOS, when you go to advanced options, you should see the sata mode -> set to RAID. Then the drive (SSD) would be accelerated and would not be visible in windows explorer / file manager. You can also view this drive within windows as -> right click on start button -> select disk management. All the system drives will show up here.

Its F12 to open BIOS on this computer.
I still don't see an SSD. Please see attached images.
SATA is set to RAID ON but I don't know why if there is only 1 drive.

Hi ormico,
Thank you for the update.
http://dell.to/1kGWIcI - enter the service tag and check current system configuration and see if the SSD was part of the original order or not. If not, then you can uninstall the Intel Rapid Storage from control panel -> programs and features. The Intel Management Engine Interface is a part of the chipset drivers and are essential for full functionality of the motherboard.

While I realize there is always a little risk in any change you make to your computer, is there any special danger involved with uninstalling Intel Rapid Storage?
I looked at the address you gave and Current Configuration, but the only storage drives listed were the HDD C: and D: and E: which are both assigned to the same Optical Drive, so no SSD.
