Interchangeable Battery

[This post has been recreated under a new user - the old post was deleted as the account didn't conform to "Site ToS" ... though nothing in the email stated WHERE it was not conforming ... hmmm ?]

I'm having problems with an Inspiron 1501.

All components seem fine but laptop will not boot - sometimes not even to initial Memory testing/Bios/Post screen.

It looks definitely like a power issue.

The Charger is outputting correct voltage.

When I run with no battery, the issues still exist.

Here's the question: can I swap out the existing hk421 (Rating: 14.8V) battery and use a gd761 (Rating: 11.1V)  battery instead ?

If the system won't boot even with no battery installed, you've a an adapter or mainboard problem - replacing the battery will not help.

A failing mainboard could easily cause intermittent no-starts.  The batteries will interchange IF they're both for 1501 models.  The 1501 doesn't share a battery with other Dell models.

Thanks for the response ejn63.

Prior to posting I spent an hour trying to get it to boot. Including leaving it plugged in with battery in to recharge battery for an hour. When in this state, the "Charging light" (beside right hinge) would flick on every 5/7 seconds but otherwise remain off. After leaving it like this it booted through POST - and then shut down.

As aforementioned, one of the first things I tried was booting without the battery - and this did not succeed.

After posting, but prior to reading the response from ejn63, I went ahead and booted on mains power with a different (gd761) battery installed. BIZARRELY it booted properly. I left it on for over 30 mins and the battery was charging properly. I then booted to gd761 battery and it booted normally. I then booted to mains without the battery and it booted properly. So I put the hk421 back in and now it's booting.

So it would seem that the problem is no longer occurring.  I have read of many issues with the Inspiron 1501 power issues - but none that I recall refer to the problem being intermittent.

So now, along with the original question ("can I swap out the existing hk421 (Rating: 14.8V) battery and use a gd761 (Rating: 11.1V)  battery instead ?") I would like to know if there are any plausible explanations for the outlined behaviour?

Ok - it does sound like a mobo issue.

However, once I got the laptop up and running I have been scanning and cleaning since.

Then - to see if I could reproduce the issue (and it's not bad practice anyway) I "collapsed" the battery (ran it down).

Now I am in the exact same position as before - no boot bios splash/post screens.

I tried booting without the battery - no joy.

So I put in the "incorrect" battery and booted it (this is with the power plugged in so it isn't actually "using" the battery power!) and it boots again.

Was it a coincidence that the problem occurred when the battery was flat ?

If not then it kind of points to being something to do with the battery or power management ?

Anyone know when the "battery check" runs as part of the boot process ? Is it prior to the the mem checks etc. ? Could this check be returning a signal which stops the boot process ?
