Internet connection keeps dropping

Hi,

I have a new Inspiron 5150 with Dell TrueMobile™ 1400 Dual-Band WLAN (802.11a/b/g,54Mbps)Mini-PCI card and I connect to a HomePortal 1000 SW from 2Wire (Yahoo DSL) for my internet connection.

I didn't have any problem with making the wireless card work, however, my connection keeps dropping.  I get disconnected from the HomePortal every 5 to 10 minutes or so and I have to keep opening the dialogue box and click on 'connect'.

When I am connected, I get excellent signal so I don't have any complaints about it, but it's just so annoying to be disconnected right in the middle of a download sometimes and to keep connecting.

Is there some settings that I need to change?  Please help.   Thanks!

I get the same problem, except on my i8500 I use a PCMCIA 2.4 GHz 54Mbps WLAN card. I've tried several different cards of various types (all 802.11b/g) and they all seem to work fine for about 5 minutes, then continually keep dropping off. Occasionally, the link light will simply blink off and on and I can't connect wirelessly at all.

Any ideas?

Cheers,

Ben Steiner

Sometimes, interference can occur from Portable phones that are on the same 2.4 Ghz range. I had to stop the use of my portable phone to stop this from occuring. After that, all was well with the world! Not saying this will definitely solve your problem, but it could!

another thing you may want to consider is if you use some sort of a rolling-IP device, this can cause problems as well. I had to reconfigure my network to solve that as well.

I have a similar problem with my wife's 5100 laptop.  It drops the wireless signal every 2 min. and gets it back in 5 sec or so.  I have tried two different routers and 2 cards in combination.  So I know it can't be a router and card problem.  My router is a Netgear wgr614v2 with latest firmware and the card is a wg511.  I always have excellent signal,  I have no phones in 2.4ghz,  I don't know of anyone in my neighborhood with a wireless setup.

Ziggy2, please explain what you said about a rolling ip. The only address that I have that changes is the isp's for the router, and it only changes when I reboot the sys.  It's dynamic.

I am ready to smash this laptop.  I posted in wireless forum today also.  Laptop, router and card are new.  Same prob. on a friends proven router and card.

I used to have that problem with my 5100...I picked up the telephone and called dell tech support and asked what was up...and after an hour or so we had it figured out and fixed. I don't remember how to do it, or what I did...but just call dell and have them help you.

Is anyone able to get answers to questions by emailing Dell Tech Support?  Emailing is more convenient.

Try to turn of the IEEE 802.1x support.
