This link may be of some help

1. Check the USB cable (if you are concerned it may be a hardware issue with the PC, try another USB device, or even try another port on the PC).

2. Verify that Apple Mobile Device Support is installed

Click Start and choose Control Panel. Click "Uninstall a program" (or if using Windows Vista's Classic View of the Control Panel, click "Programs and Features"). Verify that Apple Mobile Device Support is visible in the list of currently installed programs.

3. Restart the Apple Mobile Device Service

4. Restart the Apple Mobile Device Service

5. Check for third-party mobile phone software (if you have connected another phone to the system, this may be the problem.

6. Troubleshoot third-party security software  (you can do so using msconfig, click start, type msconfig and choose services,  check hide all Microsoft services, and then click disable all,  click start up tab and click disable all. Restart the system when prompted and test)

I hope that this was of some help.
