KERNEL STACK INPAGE ERROR--Any idea what this means ????

Moderator/Other Forum Members:

I got my SmartStep 250N back from Dell Repair yesterday morning . I had sent it because of my shutdown problems and they have done some work on heat sink flow though not sure what was done. I had the latest A05 BIOS updated in the system even before I sent the system for repair but the work card showed that the system BIOS was updated. Not sure why they did it again or there is a latest one than this one. But when I was working in the evening I got a BLUE SCREEN with this error message "KERNEL STACK INPAGE ERROR" and "beginning physical dump of memory". Not sure what this means. MS help website says it might be due to many reasons one being faulty hardware and some websites attribute it to insufficient cooling of HDD which makes it worse for me as I wonder if it is another form of overheating problem. Please let me know if u have any insights about this problem.

Thanks

geearrkay.

geearrkay,

Thank you for visiting the Dell Community Forum.

I found two Microsoft Knowledge Base articles that have information on diagnosing what may cause this error message listed below:

Troubleshooting "Stop 0x00000077" or "KERNEL_STACK_INPAGE_ERROR"
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;315266

Stop 0x00000077 or KERNEL_STACK_INPAGE_ERROR
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/treeview/default.asp?url=/technet/prodtechnol/winxppro/reskit/prmd_stp_ogli.asp

The first things I would do is try running a complete virus scan on the system and also CHKDSK (check disk) to check for problems with the hard drive (information on CHKDSK can be found by search for the name “CHKDSK” in Windows’s Help and Support section.

If a problem is noted, please contact Technical Support for more information.

I forgot to take note of the number sequence in that error message. I went and viewed the error log and couldn't find out anything related to this in the log. Iam not sure of how to make use of the MS Help section notes without this error number. I will first try to run a full system scan and CHKDSK and then get back to the forum or technical support.

Thanks.

I ran the chkdsk in the command prompt and it said there was some errors in the harddisk and asked me to run a chkdsk /f command. But my system wouldn't allow that saying that there are some open programs. So I got it touch with your technical support and learnt that it has to be done through Recovery Console.

I tried to do it with recovery console but it allows only chkdsk /p and chkdsk /r options it doesn't list any chkdsk /f option. So I ran the chkdsk /p option first and it said the disk some errors. chkdsk /r didn't give any error messages. So i exited from recovery console and ran again chkdsk in the command window. But still it shows there is some error and I need to run chkdsk /f. Iam not sure of how to run this in the recovery console as this is not listed.

Please help me. Iam in midst of important research work and Iam almost spending 50% of my time everyday in dealing with shutdown and these kind of problems. I got this Kernel_Stack_Inpage_error only after I got the system shipped back from Dell after repair to heat sink flow to correct the shutdown problem.

I spoke to Technical support as to how to run the chkdsk /f option and they had no clues. So I asked how do I know about the status of my hard drive and was asked to run a Dell Diagnostics - One Device-IDE0-Quick Test which gave a result of optimal performance. Does this mean the Hard disk is physically ok and only the data is corrupt ?

Iam not sure as to how to avoid getting error messages when Iam running chkdsk at the command prompt ?

please help.

Chkdsk /r

geearrkay,

You should be able to schedule CHKDSK to run when the system is restarted. Click on Start > Run and type in “CMD” – without quotes and click OK. From the command prompt type in “CHKDSK C: /F” – again without the quotes – and press Enter. This should give you a message that it can’t run but it should give you an option to run it next time the system restarts. Press Y for Yes and then close the command prompt Window and restart the system. The CHKDSK should run before Windows loads when the system reboots.

Another way to try scanning the hard drive is to double click on My Computer and select the hard drive you want to check. On the File menu, click Properties. Next click the Tools tab and in the Error-checking box, click Check Now. In the Check disk options select the option for “Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors”. Also select the option for “Automatically fix file system errors”.

The type of issue that CHKDSK has described can be caused by data structure problems with the hard drive and may not indicate a physical problem with the drive. One thing to be aware of is running CHKDSK with the /F option will have Windows try to fix the drive problem, depending on what is wrong with the data structure, it is possible to lose data when doing this – may not be likely but it is possible. If there is any crucial data on your drive that you can’t afford to lose, back it up before doing this.

Stephen....Thanks for your message and efforts to help me out.

I followed the procedure as described by you. The CHKDSK/f  executed when the computer restarted and then logged onto Windows in the usual manner. But when I run the chkdsk at the command prompt to check if the errors have been repaired, it is not. It still gives me the same error which is

Correcting errors in the Volume Bitmap.

Windows found problems with the file system.

Run CHKDSK with the /F (fix) option to correct these.

I think Iam back to square one. What should I do now ? Iam worried about my hard disk. Will u replace it for me as the system is still under warranty.

Kernel stack inpage error is a file on your operating system and seems to me you need dell to replace your hard drive it is a component on your hard drive or your operating system is damaged or missing that file

geearrkay,

If CHKDSK could not fix the problem found on the drive, the problem could be from a bad drive or the drive may just need to be reformatted. You may want to try backing up all data, running a DEBUG script to wipe the drive and then reformat the drive to see if that fixes the issue. If not the hard drive may need to be replaced.

If you need the hard drive replaced, you will need to contact Dell Technical Support as they handle all technical support and hardware replacement issues.

Information on using a debug script to wipe the drive and on reinstalling Windows on a non-bootable drive can be found in the following Knowledge Base articles:

Can I backup the data and request a Service Call and send my harddisk for reformatting and if further problem request a replacement. My warranty expires in another 20 days.

DELL Stephen.

Please find below the reply I got from Microsoft Help after I explained and mailed them detailedtly about the errors I get from executing the CHKDSK command.

Dear Ravikumar,

Thank you for your update. From the reply, I believe the problem is
related to the corrupt hard disk. I suggest you first refer to the
following article to back up data, then contact the computer vendor to
check hard disk.

308422.KB.EN-US HOW TO: Use Backup to Back Up Files and Folders on
Your Computer in Windows XP
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=KB;EN-US;308422

If you have any concerns, please do not hesitate to let me know. I
look forward to hearing from you.

Best Regards,

Microsoft Windows Support Professional

What should I do now ?  Do you want me to send the hard disk to you ? Iam sure you will go through the Dell Diagnostics which doesn't give me any errors. I get errors only when I run "CHKDSK" at the command prompt ? Will actions be taken to correct this error ?

Thanks,

Ravi.

I had this problem myself. Turns out when I ran chkdsk there were bad clusters on the hard drive. When I hooked up a different hard drive the problem disappeared. Suggest you replace your hard drive.
