Yes, I have been having the same problem for about 5 months now-- it's incredibly annoying, and moreover, it's caused me to lose text in several documents before.
For MrMarmite, I didn't prefer to click with the touch pad, so I had that turned off immediately anyway. In order to do that, I had to go to Dell and download the driver to do it, which is called Synaptics TouchPad V5.6 on PS/2 Port. Then you have the Mouse Properties window to unclick the "Tap to Click" box.
Now, my Dell is a C800, not a D800, so you'll probably have to call Dell if you can't find the right one. I just thought maybe this could help you.......

Any fixes would be welcome.

Ditto, with my brand new Dell D800.
It seems to be a phantom mouse click, ie the text cursor jumps to wherever the mouse pointer was pointing.
One way to help might be to turn off the ability to use the touchpad as a mouse button, but I can't find an option to do that.
I'll be calling Dell on this one tomorrow
