Keyboard typing double characters, arrow keys not functioning.

Question

My keyboard stopped typing singular characters when I type. I have tried to reset the bios but cannot because I cannot enter a password, I even tried to format the c drive but again could not because I was unable to type the word format. Here is the issue I have, when I type. q=1q, w=2w, e=3e etc. on the first row. Row 2 types all correctly, Row 3 types:z=z, x=freezes whole keyboard, c=launches help or search, v=vb, b=bv, n=nm, m=nm, comma=,    '.'=save as, /='=/'. Can someone give me a suggestion? I am unable to format, unable to boot to bios. Tried removing drivers for keyboard, did not work. Removed Keyboard from device manager to have windows reinstall the hardware, that didn't work. 4/15/2004 Update: Purchasing a USB keyboard did not work. I was not able to reset to factory defaults, even though I went through the process described by Bob. No Error message was given. In fact, it looked as if the Factory settings had taken hold, until I tried to type something.  After resetting the BIOS, I've also lost the CD/DVD drive. The machine doesn't recognize the drive at all. The drive won't read the install CD I have. I'm basically hosed. Is there a way to replace a Dell Inspiron 5100 Keyboard? Thank you for using the Dell Community Forum.

First, make sure the number lock is not turned on. You may attach an external keyboard to the system and now try to reset the system BIOS. Perform the troubleshooting listed in item #4 in the Keyboard / Pointing Devices FAQ.
