L2 Cache & FSB/Memory speed

I would appreciate some advice on the following:-

What is L2 Cache and how do I choose the right size for me when selecting a CPU.

I thought it was a good idea to have the RAM memory match the CPU speed. But Dell offer 800 FSBs with only 667 memory......no options for 800 memory.

Regards.

Thanks again 'ejn63'

Since I seem to have your attention, can I ask another question.

I don't do gaming but do use Astonomy programs and videos which work better with good graphics. I am consdering a 17" Inspiron to replace my 15.4" 6400. Should I go for the max' resolution or a dedicated graphics card with the standard screen resolution

In general, the larger the L2 cache, the better - it's a function of the CPU.

Intel has not yet released a mobile chipset with 800 MHz RAM support - the fastest RAM will run is 667 MHz, even if the CPU FSB is 800 MHz.

Thanks 'ejn63'

I use Laptops which are hard to change after purchase......is there a value in having a 800FSB CPU with 667 memory, or should I down grade my CPU to 667 CPU, which will restrict my CPU speed.

Yes, the CPU will still run faster even with the slower memory bus.

dedicated graphics card, or both.

Go for the 8600m GT right off the bat, its a pain to upgrade later for $100
