Fairly common problem, but solution is not always the same.

Might be a quick no money fix if you are willing to do a bit of disassembly to check the connections on the video ribbon cable.  Which model Inspiron?

thanks, I'll check the model tonight and let you know. I wonder if any one else has had a history of this before!

Hi

i think i have the same problem with my inspiron 8100 (bought somewhere in Nov 2001).

Last year, i contacted the dell support in austria (thats where i from), but they only wanted to sell me a new display for round about 1000€ (~1200$).

In my opinion, the screen is not defect. I think there must be a loose contact. Especially on hot summer days i can not work with the computer (not longer than some minutes). The same i told the dell support, but without success -> i should buy i new display.

Can a new display surely fix my problem? Which problem does my inspiron have?

Please start a new post instead of adding a thread onto the existing one, and carefully describe your problem. Is the screen going off completely after a while or just showing some interference which makes it hard to continue working?

There are a couple of things you can try.  If you have access to an external monitor you can see whether or not the same problem(s) show up on it also.  This helps us determine the source of the problem.

One little thing you can do while waiting for for answers from other forum members is to pry off the plastic cover above the keyboard with the power button on it. Underneath you will see where the flat video ribbon cable attaches to the video card. There is a little handle which you can use to pull it straight up and then reattach the cable.  Sometimes this connection works itself loose and causes all kinds of video problems.

For US$1200 you could by two more nice used 8100's on eBay and have lots of parts to mess around with.

Yes. After hooking up another monitor i am still get the same issue. Basically the image goes heywire on both screens so I feel confident about elimiating the LCD. I think I could have ether a dodgey video card, loose cable or bad mother board. I'm going to check for loose connections first.
