I dont know if the shutting down of the laptop is really due to the fan problem........ can there be some other problem?

Pull down the menu under Product Support (upper left of this page) 'User Guides' and look at your Service Manual
to see about removing that fan.

Using a household vacuum cleaner and compressed (or 'canned') air, perform a thorough cleaning to remove all
the build up of dust and lint, especially around the fans, cooling sinks (fins) and vents.

If your fans still don't run (when system gets warm) run Diagnostics to test.

I also have a similar situation with one of my user's laptop.  For no reason, it shuts down automatically and trys to start back up.  I scanned for viruses and it was clean... No problems registered on the event log... The laptop is only a few months old and hasn't had any problems before.  Could there be an issue with the hardware?

Welcome to the Dell User Forum,

"...Could there be an issue with the hardware? ...?

It is possible but not likely, run Diagnostics, (F12 on boot and choose from menu) or download and create boot disk from
Dell Product Support, Downloads & Drivers (upper left of this page) for your system.

There could be other software-related causes, but the fan would be my first bet. If you never hear your fan turning on, that could be triggering a thermal shutdown. Even if it doesn't feel exceptionally warm, the motherboard might be shutting you down to protect itself from overheating.

Update on my laptop problem -

I contacted support and ran the Dell diagnostic tools.  Everything checked out ok.  They told me to reformat the harddrive and reinstall everything.  I did that and it works fine for now, but I don't think this was a very good solution.  I'll have to reconsider purchasing Dells because a lot of the new laptops I've purchased recently is causing a lot of problems.
