Latitude C810 - 2 problems

I have a Latitude 810 and have two questions

1) The cooling fans on the rear of the case. Should they be running permanently or are they controlled to only run when required as currently mine don't seem to be running. If it is something I need to change in Bios please let me know

2) Recently, my screen image has started tearing so that it looks as if it is smeared to one side. Last time this happened, I changed over to mains power but this now makes no difference. Only real change has been a replacement battery this week. Worked ok on Monday withoutthe battery, but now with or without the battery it is almost unusable

I have a 6400 and can tell you how the fan works in that. It goes on only when the CPU temp hits 70C. When the CPU cools to 60C, the fan goes off.

Did you try monitoring the temps? (Not sure if you can on that machine)

Not sure about your other problem.

Hi,

The fans come on as needed, and can be tested with the Diags. You can run a program called I8Kfangui to check temps. The video issue could be cable, card or LCD. I would reseat everything first, and try an external monitor. Maybe the Diags also.

Ok, I am assuming the fan is OK as one of the two came on, so it must be switched. Didn't try the diagnostics disk yet

On the screen problem
Tried on an external moniter - Picture is fine
Op-ened up the case, pushed the ribbon cable into place, didn't seem loose, and lifted keyboard/ When powered up, everything was good and ok. But when reassembled problem came back, especially after the two screws (p) on the middle edge were put in.

Anybody any guidance please

Hi,

If the screws you mean are on the video card, it could be the card. There is a controller there to run the LCD, so even if an external screen is OK, you cant rule out the video card. See what the screws being tightened will affect.

Thanks for the reply.

The screws are the outer case screws and are the two that are situated midway along the sides at the edges.

Where will I find the video card, is it where the ribbon cable for the screen plugs in. I have tried tapping the ribbon cable to see if there is any difference but no difference

Hi,

The video card has 3 screws, and is on top of the MBD where the ribbon cable plugs in. Your machine is a large one, and often suffer from problems because they flex a bit. A tear down and put back together can fix a number of problems.

Tried a complete strip down and reassembly, but the image is now worse than before.
Having run the machine with the keyboard off, I must say the video card feels hot to the touch. Is this normal

Does this imply the video card is defunct?

Or could it be a driver issue. I am using Windows XP 2006 pro and the only driver to download on the dell support site I could find refers to an Nvidia Geforce.. Is that the correct one? if not where can I find the right one please

Hi,

The video card does run hot, later models had a fan. It can be either an ATI or Nvidia. Both were used. Different memory sizes were also used. As I mentioned before, it can be video card, cable or LCD. Try pressure and see where it changes.
