Latitude d410 boot problem

I have a latitude d410 for which i've bought a new hard disk (5400rpm 100gb).

I've reinstalled the laptop using some windows professional cd's from work (we have a key from MS that we can use at home).

Now the problem is that when i boot the laptop, it takes about 5 minutes before he's loaded into windows. I power on the laptop, and i see the dell screen. Then the screen goes black, and apparently nothing happens for about 3 - 4 minutes. Then the windows logo appears and a minute after that i'm logged on.

I have tried the following =>

different bios, error occurs with a04 and a05

different hard drives : same problem

tried several versions of windows xp (with sp2 bootstrapped and not) : same problem

changed some bios settings, default bios settings.

powering on without the dvd drive or the battery

all this, and still the same result.

So at the moment, i'm at a loss about what i can do to check this.

Only thing i've thought about is the dell utility partition. But can the lack of that partition cause this problem ?

no, the lack of the diagnostic partion has no bearing.

are you saying that the machine eventually boots to completion, but it's just slow?

make sure you have all the updates, and defrag the drive.

i assume that you downloaded the drivers for your machine / OS and installed them in the right order

I get into windows indeed. And it seems that there's no problem once i'm working in windows.

Browsing, exploring network disks, internet all seems to be working at a decent speed.

It's just right after the POST screen it seems that my machine hangs for a few minutes.

I've just downloaded a dell diagnostic image for a cd, and all tests are passed.

Defragmentation seems a long shot to me, since it's a newly installed OS, and i chose to format the drive (ntfs, didn't choose the quick format). But hey, it's worth a shot :)

About the order of driver install, what's the correct order to install then ? But I don't think this is the problem, because i think the problem is there before the laptop begins to load windows.

*edit*

ok, must be late here. Cause it took a bit longer to realize it was a link.

Anyways, that's about the order i install drivers. Only the audio and modem was installed at the latest.

How much memory do you have? Usually a slow boot means that you need more memory.

i think the order is important, and if you did it wrong, some piece of hardware just wouldn't work.

you might look at StartDelayer http://www.r2.com.au/software.php?page=2&show=startdelay

free, use it to delay the start up of startup programs.  let the machine boot to usefullness sooner.

that's about all i have for you.  good luck

Well, i'll try  reinstall then. And this time do the correct order of drivers.

Memory is 1GB, should be more then enough for windows xp, since the machine will only be used for office use.

Yeah, 1GB should be good for XP. If you had like 256MB, then a slow boot wouldn't surprise me.

After you reinstall, install all of the available Windows Updates and drivers (you can find them on http://support.dell.com).

Stop SHOUTING.

I can't help you any further.

I have no idea what you are doing.

To install Windows on the D410 with a hard drive you need a genuine Dell Windows XP DVD or a genuine Microsoft XP DVD and one of these
