Latitude D800 Keyboard errors

Question

I'm having problems w/ a Latitude D800 keyboard.  The issue is very consistent.  Here is a list of what is typed vs what is displayed: a =a1 s =s2 d =d3 f =f4 j =j7 k =k8 l =l9 ; =;0   The same results are displayed if you use the keys 1-4 and 7-0 and caps will produce the same results except capped. This problem occurs in Dos and Windows.  The keyboard has been replaced as has the system board.  The Bios has been flashed several times and all Bios keyboard settings have been changed every which way.  The Numlock and Scroll lock keys have been pressed w/ no change.  An external keyboard works fine. Any ideas??

I don’t know how what you describe could be possible considering that fact that everything that could be related to the issue has been replaced.

At this point I would think about the possibility of a software issue.

Yes, I agree, it could be a software problem. You might try running a repair on windows. It might even come down to (as a last resort) reinstalling your os. If it comes down to that, don't forget to back up your information. Also you might try installing the drivers for your input devices (if you haven't already tried that _ those can be found on support.dell.com But also, you might have been sent either a defective motherboard, or keyboard. You can call us any time for help with this issue!

This cannot be a software issue as it is present in DOS.  I have removed the HDD and booted straight into Dos and the issue is the same.

I'm sorry about that, I must have misread, I didn't notice befor that you said it was present in DOS. You woul dneed a harddrive replacement, which we can do if you are still under warrenty. if not we could set up an out of warrenty dispatch, or if you didn't want to go through us, you could also check around at any local computer store to see what they had to offer.

Note: At one point I REMOVED THE HDD AND BOOTED STRAIGHT TO DOS.  The problem still persisted.  How exactly do you think a HDD replacement would resolve this issue???

ok well you did not put that you removed the harddrive previouslly. in order to make a correct diagnosis, you have to know exact symptoms and everything that has been tried.

If an external keyboard works fine, then there is a problem with your keyboard and you should have it replaced againk, you were probably just shipped a defective keyboard. That has happened before.

Hi,

Try the Diags for the keyboard, the more you find out, the easier a resolution will be. I would also ask for the keyboard and MBD to be replaced as a pair.

The LCD is obviously a source of the problem, given that its displaying the characters, even though you haven't typed them.   This is sarcasm by the way, for those of you who haven't realised.   I'd be doing what AussieChris has suggested, try diags and ask for the MB/KB to be replaced as a pair.
