LATITUDE E5400 SCREEN GLITCH

So this computer is relatively new. I've had it for around three months (it was refurbished, I believe) and have done diagnostic tests from this website on it, made sure there was zero maleware and viruses, yet no matter what I do the computer's screen keeps glitching out. It especially happens when I first turn on the laptop, once I shut down a few startup programs it's less 'glitchy' but it still continues to occasionally glitch the screen while I'm using my laptop.

It doesn't matter whether or not my laptop is overheating or not, either. I could have my laptop off for hours and be completely cold, but when I start it up, it starts to glitch.  I certainly haven't had my laptop dropped either. I really have no idea where this glitch is coming from.

Here's a video I took of the glitch problem

Any help would be awesome. Thanks.

Hi,

Thank you for reaching us.

Have you tried any troubleshooting steps to diagnose the problem other than running virus scans?

You may try few steps that could help us isolate the faulty part.

  • Try connecting an external monitor or a TV if you have one, Check if the glitch is seen on the external monitor too.
  • Run a diagnostics on the screen by holding down the D key when the machine is OFF, Then press the Power button once.  It gives solid colors, Check if the glitch is displayed there too
  • Also you may run a thorough hardware diagnostics to confirm all the parts are running okay.

To enter diagnostics, Keep tapping F12 on the startup Dell logo that comes as soon you press the power button.

Select "Diagnostics" from the list, Run it completely and let us know if it passes, Else please reply with the Error message and validation code, we shall take it further.

Thank you

Hello Geoff,

Does the issue happen when the charger is connected or irrespective of any power source ?

Load the BIOS menu and let us know if the glitch still happens.

If you swing the screen back and forth, does the glitch stops??

Please run diagnostics by going to f12 menu and let us know if the glitch happens during test.

Regards

I'm not sure how to load the BIOS menu, but it still happens when the charger is plugged in. Swinging the screen back and forth doesn't help the glitch from stopping.

When I did run the diagnostics test, the glitch did still happen.

Sadly, I don't have a connector cord to be able to hook up to my TV or anything like that, so I can't find out if it's my external monitor.

The diagnostics I ran, both with the colors - and since the glitch is just moving the screen around and glitching the visuals on the screen, it's hard to tell if it was on that. However, it was on the actual diagnostics test.

The hardware diagnostics test all ran through with passes, so that's probably not as helpful.

Hi,

Thank you for the detailed description.

The issue is definitely a hardware fault. Probably LCD failure. Since we do not have a cable to connect an external display, Is it possible for you to remotely access this laptop from another machine ?

That's similar to connecting an external display as you wouldn't see the glitch on the main machine if its a LCD issue.

Thank you

I just remotely accessed the computer from a different laptop and the glitch doesn't show up  Does this mean that it's this laptop LCD screen? Do I have to replace the screen? Or is it the laptop itself?

Thank you guys for being so helpful. It's really awesome that a lot of you try to help as much as you can.

Hi Geoff,

You're welcome.

Yes it does appear to be an issue with the screen if the glitch didn't popup in the other screen.

Replacing the screen and cable should resolve this issue.

Thanks
