Latitude E6400: Reset Preboot Authentication Method to Password
Hi there,
I recently set the Preboot Authentication Method to Smartcard. This worked fine with a contactless smartcard. Now I am trying to set the authentication method back to Password authentication as I don't want to use a smartcard anymore. In order to reach this, I followed the steps described in the Embassy Security Center Manual (resetting the System Password to null, Setting an Admin Password and Resetting it to null), but nevertheless the Preboot-Users are not deleted. If I set a system password (or even a hard disk password), I am always prompted for the Smartcard when booting.
Do you know a possibilty to reset the Preboot Authentication Method to Password Authentication?
Thanks for any helpful answers.
mfs.

I don't know about smart cards and wether there isn't a more standard way to undo their enrollment but you might try the method i used in:
http://www.dellcommunity.com/supportforums/board/message?board.id=insp_bios&thread.id=47480
(If you choose to try it and feel brave(!) you might want to do so without the x step maybe even the c step as i suspect one only needs to delete the database ("PrebootEnrollmentUtil.exe r ***") and reboot, even if not one should in the extreme case be able to remove the bios passwords boot and issue all needed commands but no guarante there)
Should that indeed work and there is no other way to remove the enrollment i guess it might be due to the new kind of bios dell uses in the new machines (some bug in the preboot authentication database handling on the bios side and no proper support for the bios yet by the wave/dell preboot app)
hope that helps :)

Hello, I have same trouble. I can't disabled Preboot authentication. There is a bug and I can't start my computer because It don't accept my password... I think the Embassy Software is not very stable because I can't enter with the password that I put in this software...
Could you give a solution to disable Preboot authentication... the following link is not accessible:

Thank You.

Hi, i had the same problem but i set the password non smartcard authentication, i find the solutions to disable pre-boot password....
you try turned on laptop them press F2 to entry in bios, after this the laptop ask to you the System Password or smartcard authentications, yuo put your credential, finally you entry in the bios settings.
you go to setting Security----->system password
in the right side you put your old credential (where there is write "Enter the old password") and let blank the others fileds "Enter the new password" and "Configrm new password".
if it works in the field "Enter the old password" there is write Not Set.
