LCD Screen Problem - Backlight?
I have a Dell Latitude 110L that has developed a problem LCD screen. After about 15 minutes running on battery power, the screen turns black - but if you look closely you can still dimly see the images of the desktop and open windows. Closing and reopening the lid of the computer brings the monitor back at full brightness, but the screen dims again within minutes. I've timed how long it takes for the screen to go black/dim/; the interval is never exactly the same - sometimes 45 seconds, sometimes 29, etc. The general trend seems to be to go black more quickly each time, though sometimes the screen lasts a bit longer than the time before.
I've checked all of the software programs that might be involved - power management, display properties, and Dell's "quickset" program, and they are all set to prevent the screen from turning itself off - to no avail. (I've uninstalled quickset just to make sure, but the problem hasn't cleared up.) I've also tried running the laptop on battery power with the desktop extended to an external monitor; when the light dims on the laptop LCD, the image on the external monitor remains brightly lit. After searching through some of Dell's message boards I found people with problems that sound similar (though not exactly the same) - my sense is that this is most likely a problem with the backlight or the power source to the backlight.
The warranty is up, so I'd prefer the cheapest solution. Any suggestions?

Most common problem is the lamp goes bad. They arent user replaceable. Some have done this but its more than just a little bit of a pain. There are also LCD repair shops that do it for a fee.
