Loop in Logon Screen
First, I'm on a Inspiron 6000 with XP Home addition.
Out of the blue I recieved a message "...problem has been detected...windows has been shut down...". It went on to say that if it the first time, restart... Well, I did and now I can't sign onto windows.I think this occured after one of those automatic windows update. Otherwise I can't explain it. Haven't added any hardware or software recently.
When windows boots, the windows signon screen comes up. When I put in my user name and password, it first looks like it is signing on, i.e. "closing network connections, loading personal settings, etc., but rather than opening windows it loops to the sign on screen again.
Have tryed most of the fixes? Safemode, last known.., sign on as administrator.
In all cases the system reverts to the signon screen and loops.
Anyone seen this situation or have any suggestions??

Assuming that you do not have any vital data on your hard drive that you cannot live without then the easiest solution would be to do a system restore by using ctrl+F11 at startup.

Thanks for the input. In looking into the issue, it appeared that a restore would probably be necessary, but thought I'd try a post to be sure that there wasn't a simple fix that I was missing. Not real crazy about having to install all the program files? A tech guy at CompUSA steered me to a HD enclosure so I was able to back up my data files from the HD. Cost $20 for the hardware, but worth it to not have to go to my last back up, which was further back than it should have been?
How about another question You seem to be informed when it comes to this stuff, as opposed to an old retired guy like myself!
Is there a way to back up all the program files, etc. on a computer so that if you need to do a restore you can just copy the back up disc to the HD and go forward? In other words duplicate all the stuff from my desktop to my laptop without installing all the individual programs?
Again, thanks.

it's usually not possible to transfer a program installed on on pc onto another as the program usually has registry entries.
as for backup I would suggest acronis True Image which can back up your system on an incremental and scheduled basis.

I'll look into that automatic back up software. Thanks for the suggestion.
