not a single reply as of today. Well - it seems, the fan is also running faster than it did previously.

One option to me is to restore to original dell system, to know for sure. This isn't too difficult, using ghost (and so on..), just time-consuming.
.
Dell did not reply to my question, why the "preinstalled system" and the "ODM" system are not the same. (ODM because the mentioned Windows recovery CD is created by something named odm.exe).

i too have expierenced this problem.  I would like to know what happened to the hibernate button when i press start|turn off computer.  I only see standby, restart, and shutdown.  There used to be a hibernated button as well.  my hibernate works just fine, but the button is missing.

Dear ...., today I did some Googling again. There is a Microsoft Knowledge Base article about this,

When you click “Turn Off Computer” on the Start menu, the Hibernate button does not appear in Windows XP Service Pack 2 or in Windows XP Tablet PC Edition 2005

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;893056 , dated october 5, 2005.

You need file msgina.dll, version 5.00.2600.2603 instead of version 5.00.2600.2180, and a registry addition. File msgina.dll is available as a hotfix from Microsoft. I called a Swiss phone number to obtain it.

It can also be done with courage. The file msgina.dll, version 5.00.2600.2603 was already present in c:\i386. It can not simply be copied to c:\windows\system32, as all changes to this folder are undone by Windows immediately, and copying required tricks (beyond description here). Plus the registry change described in the kb article.

Greetings, Peter.

edit: seems the preinstalled OS contains the hotfix, but the ODM CD didn't.
