M1530 DEP Huge Problem

Hello,

I am having a problem disabling DEP within my computer. I theoretically know how to disable DEP using

"bcdedit /set {current} nx AlwaysOff"

as well as disabling CPU XD in the system bios.   HOWEVER:

If I disable EITHER ONE,  non-exclusive, my computer will not boot, PERIOD.  Immediate blue screen of death as soon as it tried to load windows.

Recap:   I disable DEP in Windows Vista, BSOD

I disable XD in System BIOS, BSOD

Any combination of the two, BSOD

Any real reason why?  Its really annoying because there is an application I would love to run out of the constraints of DEP yet when I try to add it to the "exclude" list, it notifies me that the application MUST be run under DEP.

Thanks

Richard Rodriguez

I also have exactly the same problem with my brand-new Inspiron 1525.  I must disable DEP as it won't let me install software that I need.  I have tried the above code twice and both times I was only able to get the computer functional again by doing a complete factory re-image.

Any advice would be very much appreciated!!

I have tried making a DEP exception for the program I am trying to install and that does not work.  As far as I know, there is no way of completely disabling DEP through a graphical interface.  If you know of some way I would love to hear it!

Have you guys tried just disabling DEP through it's graphical interface, rather than using some command line switch?  Or for that matter, tried making an exception for the program that's causing issues?

Hi Everybody,

i just wanted to let you know that Microsoft is (surprisingly) willing to offer free support about this issue.  I have been in an email dialogue with them for about a week now and they seem to have some good ideas, although the problem is not solved yet.

Normally you need to pay for support, but Microsoft is currently offering free support for Service Pack 1.  Well, this is probably not a Service Pack 1 issue, but they are helping me for free anyway so who cares!

Anyway, for free email, chat, or phone support go here:

I disabled the DEP on my 1720 and kept getting the BSOD as it was booting up.  To resolve the issue I DL'd a Vista recovery disk, as Dell did not give me a Vista Disk that has the recovery tools on it (retail has it).
Boot into that

choose repair on lke the 3rd screen.  it will try to auto fix.  (it won't work) click cancel.
Choose advanced , choose command prompt.  navigate to c:\windows\system32. type: bcdedit.exe [hit enter].

At the bottom of the output look at identifier, it will probably be {default}

type: bcdedit.exe /set {default} nx AlwaysOn

(if yor identifier did not say default it prolly said {current}, if so use {current} or whatever it listed.)

reboot, and you should be back up and running.

If you use AlwaysOn at the end of that command the DEP will load into every process.  you can also use Optin, which is the default setting that only loads into critical processes that allow add-ons, like Explorer.exe, and Desktop manager.   (google around for a full explanation if the different command switches)

once you booted up you can run CMD as ADmin, and change back to Optin.(probably desirable, I left min on always on and it was killing processes left and right)

If it will still not boot check, that you re enable the DX setting in the bios, under security.  it appears that with these dells, you must have both the hardware DEP, and the VISTA DEP enable to boot.  sounds like a bios issue to me.

Good LUCk!!

Today I spent about 4-5 hours on the phone with various support people in Dell and Microsoft.  Nobody has any clue how to disable DEP on my computer.

This was one of several significant problems I was having with my brand new laptop.  So, tonight I decided this piece of garbage is going back.  Way to go Microsoft, I'm getting a Mac!
