When I hold FN + Power the three leds flash randomly as there doing there checks then it beeps twice and the caps lock lights up solid on its own. Can anyone tell me what that means please?

Hi Tom,

Please connect an external display and check if the same issue persists. The XPS M1710 has the following diagnostics indicators. Please check the status of the light and let me know the status. You can watch the video:

Alternatively, try to the steps mentioned below

Drain the residual power from the laptop:

  • Disconnect any external peripherals (flash drives, printers, external hard drives) from the computer
  • Then remove the adaptor from the computer
  • Remove the battery from the computer
  • Press and hold the power button on the computer for 10 seconds
  • Reconnect the battery and the adapter, restart the computer and check

Hope this helps. Please reply if you have any questions.

Hi again,

Connecting it to an external monitor does nothing mate and I watched the video above and its strange cause it never stops on one actual error I have recorded a video of it doing the tests but there is nothing on the screen and also it does not do the two beeps as it did before just silent. At the end of the tests it just restarts but still shows nothing on the screen, fans etc.

Hi Tom,

Thank you for the response. Please re-post the video as I was unable to find it. To post a video:

- Click on 'Use rich formatting'
- Click on the icon 'Insert Video'
- Choose the appropriate option, click on 'Insert'

I would recommend you to drain the residual power, then restart the computer. Keep it powered on for a few minutes. Then press the 'Caps lock' key and check if the light goes off.

Please reply with the findings.

Hi Tom,

Thank you for the response. I have watched the video. The flashing lights sequence indicates that the issue could be with the memory modules. I would recommend you to reseat the memory modules of the computer. If there are two modules installed, then remove both of them and test the system with only one module.

Note: Before removing the parts, please ensure that all peripherals (flash drives, printers, external hard drives) are disconnected; battery is removed and AC Adapter is unplugged from the computer.

Here are the steps:

  • Locate the memory module cover on the bottom of the system

  • Use a Phillips screwdriver to loosen the captive screws securing the memory module cover

  • Slide the memory module cover open and then remove it

  • Pull out on the retaining clips to allow the memory module to release upward

  • Pull the memory module upward to a 45-degree angle

  • Lift and remove the memory module from the socket. Repeat these steps to remove any additional memory modules

  • Reverse the previous steps to replace the memory

Hope this helps. Please reply with the findings.
