M3800 USB 3 Problems
I've had my M3800 for 20 months now, and it has had issues from day 1 that are still unresolved. My motherboard has been replaced three times, and the keyboard twice. It appears Dell is unable to fix the problems, so I've resolved to just live with them until it's time to replace the laptop. This is my first Dell in quite some time. Previously I've had Compaq and HP, and never had an issue with any of them.
The USB 3 ports on the left seldom recognize USB 3 devices, but the right side USB 3 port always does. This has happened with my Note 3, and a hard drive I have in a USB 3 enclosure. Plug the same device and cable into the right side and it works fine.
The other issue I have is the left shift key will stick (not physically) randomly while typing or using the arrow keys. The odd thing is it will also do this with an external keyboard.
I have three OSes on my laptop (W7P, W8.1P, Linux Mint 17.1), and these issues appear in all of them, even in virtual machines running in Virtual Box! Because of this I'm fairly certain it is not a driver issue.
When it's time to replace this laptop, the next one will not be a Dell.

Hi,
This seems to be a hardware issue wherein the left USB port has failed.Do send us the service tag of the system via private message only so that I can check previous technician's logs.
Awaiting your response.

I'm sorry, but I'm not willing to go through the hassle of yet another service call when previous attempts have failed to fix it. I would only consider it if Dell has released a new revision to my motherboard. It has been proven that replacing the motherboard with the same rev will not fix the problems I'm having.
Thanks for the reply!

One month later, after going back and forth with Dell support they send me a replacement laptop - which is great, except it is the WRONG ONE. Their support team is trying really hard to do a good job, it's got to be just a frustrating for them as it is for me. I've never had trouble with Dell support in the past, so either they are going down hill, or this laptop is an albatross.
Avoid the first generation of the M3800.

Last January Dell replaced my M3800 with a current model, and it has all the same problems that my first M3800 had, and a couple more. When I boot up I see strange patterns on the LCD display, and only on the LCD. This model only has one USB 3 port on the left, my old one had two. If I have the USB receiver for my wireless mouse plugged into the USB 2 port on the right, and plug in a device in the USB 3 port next to it, then my mouse starts acting like the system is at 100% load, when in fact it is idle. If I move either the mouse's receiver or the other device to the left USB 3 port, then mouse works fine.
This is the worst laptop you can buy.
