Mainboard (plus CPU) problem, or simply a power switch problem?

What happens if the power switch is damaged? What are the symptoms?

I am experiencing problem to boot the inspison 5100. And I suspect this might be a power switch problem. Here is the symptom again: When try to press the power button, the power LED is on for a sec, and the fan runs for about a sec and stops. The power LED begins to blink and keeps blinking at every second. Everything else is silent. To stop the blinking, I have to press the power button again, the LED will be on for a few seconds, then off. Could this be the power switch problem?

Someone says this is a sympton of the main board failure and needs to be replaced. When I called service, I was told that I might need to order the CPU as well. However, I like to be sure before ordering anything. Could some one give me further advice please? Thanks in advance.

Like i said in your other post, your motherboard is shot, i dont think the CPU is damaged but it might be. Get a new motherboard (about 700 dollars), or sell the system for parts.

Did you try reseating the RAM? that is what my 1150 does when it's not fitted correctly, with the power light blinking once and then the flashing. My 1150 had all of the lights on strobe when my mainboard died.
