My guess is that it is hardware.
In Dell's older Latitudes with both a trackpoint and a touchpad, the mouse cursor would jump around. If your XPS has both a trackpoint and a touchpad, I would try disabling one or the other in BIOS.

Hmm. The computer has not got a trackpoint. Sadly enough... If so, I would gladly tried your advice. Thanks!
