Memory Type confused

I have a customers Dell laptop Inspirion 1501 with windows vista.

He wants to upgrade his memory.  System currently has 1gb  2 512mb,  When I ran a program to tell me what type of memory it has it came back with DDR2(pc2-4300) Speed: 266mhz(ddr2 533)   When I checked the dell website it listed an entirely different type of memory for this.  DDR2 SDRAM Speed 800mhz and PC2-6400

Then I see two different things that tell me that 2gb is max then I see 4gb is max.  Can anyone help here?

thank you

PC2-6400 will work in slower backward mode, so you can use it.

Max is 2G as 2X 1G soDIMMs.

Ok sounds like  we are getting somewhere lol.  So then this would work for this laptop

Kingston 1GB 200-Pin DDR2 SO-DIMM DDR2 533 (PC2 4200) Laptop Memory

Yes, as long as the part number starts with KTD.  If it's Value RAM (KVR) watch out - be sure you can return the RAM if it doesn't work, as it may not.
