Microphone..... Volume...... Beeping

Hey Guys,
Basically, I have 3 problems with the audio on my Dell 8600. Firstly, it takes an extremely hard push on the volume control to make it go up or down, is this normal? The second problem is that the microphone sometimes works, and sometimes doesn't. If I get no input, I have to reboot, and then it works fine. Still, this is extremely annoying. The third problem, is that I still recieve that annoying motherboard beep you get before installing the SigmaTel drivers (which I have the latest version of). For instance, if I misspell by password, I get a loud beep. This is especially annoying, as I have to use my laptop in school, and this beep (which is audible by others even when I use headphones, as it is almost a motherboard beep) interupts the lesson.

Could anyone give me some advice on what to do?

Oh, and in reference to the microphone. I check each time what the input is listed at. And it is the same when it is working and when it is not, so its not a case of Windows switching it to a non-default input. :smileysad:

Nope, but I am going to ring Dell about this, so when I do, I'll be sure to post a solution for you.

However, until then, anyone have solutions to any of the 3 problems?

thanks.
The volume button above my keyboard works as you would expect. No need for any excessible force. Can't say i have any experience with the microphone. It seems to work but i don't use it so it could be intermittend.

"fixed" the beeping:
some actions apparently desparately need to make sound. So if you remove the windows sound for this action it starts beeping. To stop the beeping assign a wav file to the action in the control panel. You could then set the volume for system sound to minimum, or you could make a wav file with no sound in it.
hope this helps.

I also heard that this may be a problem with the infra red port. Try disabling it in the Bios or using alternative drivers instead of the rather terrible crystal ones the computer ships with. Do a search under AC97 on this forum to find more details.

I'm not sure if the early 8600 had an infrared port, but the one I have doesn't (along with serial and parallel ports)

I have a 9300 and I'm  not quite sure what you're saying to do.  Can you go through it step by step for us lay people.  thanks

on my system (inspiron 8600, win 2k (YES i got rid of !@#$%^ XP)):

start button
settings
control panel
sounds and multimedia
set scheme to windows default
set sound volume to minimum (LOW)
OK, no more sound to be heard as a result of windows
All normal sounds (music, video, enz) retainted.
No more beeps coming from the speakers

If u want to hear some notifications, but not all, you cannot set volume to low because this affects all windows action sounds.
Instead u leave the volume as desired but assign a inaudible sound to actions u dont want to hear.

-create a wav file with no sound in it (using soundrecorder)
-start button
-settings
-control panel
-sounds and multimedia
-find the action u DONT want to hear in the sound Events section of the window, and select
-click Browse
-find the silent wav file
-OK
-OK

hope this helps
