Missing Device Driver for Unknown Device

I have a E5410 laptop with 4 GB of memory and a new 320 GB hard drive.

It has Windows 7 64 bit Professional installed on it.

All the devices installed properly except one unknown device that I have not been able to find a suitable driver.  Even after using the the Dell support software I have not been able to find a driver.

Hi nvdc89d,

I would like to know the ‘Hardware ID’ of the unknown device. Please follow the steps mentioned below to find the ‘Hardware ID’ in device manager.

  1. Open Device manager.
  2. Right click on the ‘Unknown device’ and select ‘Properties’.
  3. Click on ‘Details’ tab.
  4. Under ‘Property’ there should be drop down.
  5. Please select ‘Hardware IDs’ from the drop down.
  6. Please give us the details you find under values.

Hello and good morning

I had the same issue and it turned out to be my Western Digital External HDD. I plugged it in for a backup and restore.

When I went to windows update there it was so I downloaded it and everything is working properly.

Food for thought.
