missing drivers for Dell D510
I have an old Dell d510 laptop and had to reinstall the operating system. The laptop has no connection with the internet now. Device manager shows "other devices" containing Ethernet controller, multimedia audio controller, PCI modem, video controller and video controller (VGA) are missing drivers (see attachment).
I went to the Dell website and downloaded only the chipset (first) and network drivers (later) you recommended. I ran them from the usb stick and files were unzipped in C:\dell\drivers\ I rebooted the computer after the chipset and again after the network drivers. They seemed to unzip and run the install properly. I tried reinstalling driver button from system devices menu and clicking on Ethernet controller and the hardware wizard started. I chose the directory where the files were unzipped and it couldn't find a driver. A few of these unzipped folders had setup.exe files. Some of the installs went well, some failed. The ones that failed had a regular DOS icon. I double clicked the file and the screen went black (dos screen) for a split second, and back to "my computer". One time I got a message there was no file in a certain location. Explorer says it exists. The driver wizard cannot find any compatible drivers.
Some download sites want to scan my computer first but of course I need the driver to connect and run the scan - big help. The names used and lack of descriptions for the drivers leaves me helpless. Some are simple and only have one file for that component. One says "application" and it has 3 files. What application? Networking has 8 files to choose from. I read someone could find a driver using a device driver number and goggling > pci\ven_8086&dev_266e&subsys_01af1028&rev_03\3&61aaa01&0&f2 I tried the PRO/wireless file and it started normally unzipping files to C:\dell\drivers then stopped with the message "This self-extracting zip file is part of a multidisk zip file. Please insert the last disk of the set." Then "An error occurred while unzipping. One or more files were not successfully unzipped. the error code is 110." Device manager did not change. What and where are the drivers I need for the old Dell? I have tried most of the drivers Dell has available for that computer.
PS I don't know how to post pictures or attachments

You must install both the chipset drivers and Notebook system software first or the other drivers do not install correctly. You don't need to have the computer scanned. Just make a note of the hardware in Device Manager and get only the drivers for your model and the hardware in the list that you actually have. There might be more configurations and more drivers available than you need.

I see only one chipset driver from the list shown for my model. I listed and tried to send a screen shot of device manager showing missing drivers. As I said earlier, I have tried most of the drivers in the list. Should I make sure every available driver is tried? What about the drivers that flashes a black screen when I try to run them? Those are not loading and do not work. How will installing blue-tooth help, it has wi-fi.

HI Mary G:
These are the drivers I have tried that ate on the list for dell latitude d510 from the list of drivers on the dell website. None of the ones listed below work on my laptop. Can you please tell me which ones to download that will actually work on my machine. Yes I have tried installing the chip-set before any other driver.
intel_multi-device_a18_r257684.exe dos screen flash
r81796.exe dos screen flash
r85258.exe all files unzipped install wizard repair successful (See II)
r88786.exe dos screen flash
r88851.exe dos screen flash
r90698.exe (see I)
r92936.exe repaired than reboot (III)
r99254.exe dos screen flash
r99998.exe dos screen flash
r104087.exe dos screen flash
r104088.exe dos screen flash
r107621a.zip (IV)
r111827.exe No intel(R) pro/wireless network adapter found in this machine
r114079.exe chipset Claims to be sucessfully installed - rebooted - no change
r114582.zip Clicked setup file - Sonic DLA 4.89 is already installed
r115564.exe (I)
r128346.exe dos screen flash
r129472.exe patch for bluetooth - don't care, didn't install
r131084.exe dos screen flash
r142984.exe dos screen flash
r151519.exe WLAN card -
r154270.exe dos screen flash
r154493.exe Installs something - no change
setup.exe Damn driver tuner that loads *** on the computer - if connected.
staticic_r273267_a01.zip dos screen flash
(I) This self-extracting zip file is part of a multidisk zip file. Please insert the last disk of the set.
(II) Ran r85258 file and restarted computer. All of "other devices" still uninstalled but ethernet controller on the network adapters stopped working from the device driver list.
(III) Intel wireless troubleshooter popped up (for the first time) saying "The wireless network driver is not installed". I am sooooo glad it told me this or I would have never known. Why else would I be trying to find drivers. Wireless event viewer shows 3 events. Error - driver not installed. Information - start adapter problem trace. Information - no supported wireless adapters. It came up with a detailed help list of things to try and one suggestion was to add\remove programs, change, repair. It wanted the xp disk inserted. I got the "network adapter" driver working but nothing in "other devices".
(VI) Setup cannot find a valid version of this software to upgrade. Please make sure that you are using the correct update version.
(V) It took about 15 minutes for the computer to shut down which was why I reinstalled xp and lost my drivers in the first place. Still there are no drivers in "other devices". Click Start and Dell Wireless and Dell Wireless WLAN Card Utility is there. Click it and message "internet configuration is inconsistent. Please restart the machine to resolve the problem - RRRight. I deleted it. At least the computer shuts down in a reasonable time.
None of those on the list works on my computer. There has to be something so I can communicate with my laptop again.

hi: I'm still having problems with the laptop. Should I start q new thread? I somehow got it working with the drivers I had downliaded. Then I had trouble with IE and a screen came up and had me download MS Fixit. Fixit crashed which led to anothr screen for anther diagnostic program. That one hung up and I had to hold down the power button to force a reboot. I was able to download Opera which was more sta ble early on. Things got worse till both IE and Opera was unuseable. Used both Sllimdriver and Device Driver to make a backup file of the installed drivers. Reinstalled XP using quick format. Tried Slimdriver and Device Driver but they will NOT run without an internet connection. now i'm back where I was when this thread was started. The programs drivers listed in an earlier post that flashed a dos creen, Itried in a CMD window and got error message memory overflow.
