Missing drivers

Hi,

I have an ancient Latitude X300 that required an OS re-install. That was done, but I misplaced any other CDs with the predictable result: there are devices with yellow ?s all over. The Wireless and Modem cards are easily available on dell.ca but others are not, notably Ethernet Controller, Multimedia Audio Controller, Video Controller and Video Controller (VGA Compatible).

Any idea where I could get these from? Better still is there a place where the original CDs can be had in .iso format ready for burning?

Thanks in advance.

You have the Dell Wireless Application taking control of the wireless card, this symbol and you can adjust the settings by clicking on this icon.

The Windows Wireless Connection Application (icon below) will not be able to take control of the Wireless Card while the Dell one is set to manage it:

This is normal operation, you can disable the Dell Application and allow Windows to take control but its not recommended.

The disconnected icon is your ethernet cable which is fine given you are connected via wireless.

I'm not sure why you have another one that is connected unless it is attached to a Docking Station.

Hi cheebase,

You may download and install the required drivers for your system from the below link.

http://dell.to/1clpm0l

Click on the link and select the operating system. The drivers are not available for Windows Vista or above.

To check the correct order for driver installation, refer to the link below.

http://dell.to/12yaACW

If you find any difficulties, please share the operating system and Hardware ID’s of the devices with missing drivers.

You may follow the instructions mentioned below to get the Hardware ID:

  • In ‘Device Manager’, right click ‘Network Controller’.
  • Click ‘Properties’.
  • Click ‘Details’.
  • Search for ‘Hardware ID’.
  • Provide the numbers after VEN and DEV.

Similarly check and share the Hardware ID for other devices with missing drivers.

Hope this helps. Please feel free to reply for any further assistance.

Hello,

Thanks for the quick reply!
There is a bewildering number of drivers on that URL so it is best if I fish out the hardware IDs. BTW this is a Canadian location, if it makes any difference...

OpSys:
  winXPpro ver.2002 + SP3

Ethernet Controller:
  VEN_14E4&DEV_165D
Multimedia Audio Controller:
  VEN_8086&DEV_24C5
Video Controller:
  VEN_8086&DEV_3582
Video Controller (VGA Compatible)
  VEN_8086&DEV_3582

(under each device the respective combinations appear four times with different SUBSYS and CC designations)

Thanks for the help...

PS. if you need the tag for original configuration, let me know.

Hello,

The audio and video are up and running. The Ethernet still sports the yellow? and the Device Manager reports that the driver is not instilled. This is interesting because something was installed...

...and the solution is likely at your fingertips... :-)

Hi cheebase,

It appears that the driver did not install completely.

As per the hardware ID provided, the link for the driver is correct.

Install the driver again from the link provided earlier and restart the system once the installation is complete.

Keep me posted with the results. I will be glad to assist you further.

Hello,

Oh... I think I know what happened: browsing through again the maze of drivers (http://dell.to/1clpm0l) it became apparent that your link (http://dell.to/12QQMZd) points to the diagnostic utility (file: R62710.EXE) and not the driver (file: R133052.EXE) itself. Now, I have them both installed... no more yellow ?s!! :-)

However...  my tray now exhibits too many network icons...

...and the wireless - while working flawlessly -  can't be controlled anymore:

...furthermore, the LAN reports to be connected - with or without actual cable connection - yet 0 volume of traffic is shown.

I think I'm in trouble... can you help?

Hi Jim,

If you have Intel Pro Wireless installed on the computer then I would recommend to let the Intel's application control the wireless module. Its better if we don't let windows take control over the wireless to provide any unnecessary glitches.

Hope this helps.

Thank you all who contributed to the solution! The following sequence also contributed in cementing the matter:

1. Click Start and Run
2. Type into the Run box "services.msc" (without the quotation).
3. Scroll down and look for the service Wireless Zero Configuration

Double Click on the Service

4. Make sure that it is Started and that the startup type is set to automatic.  If it's not started, press Start

Now everything works as before. I marked the problem solved.
