More video issues

I had initially thought I was having a driver issue with my new laptop's video card (GeForce 7800) but its looking like the drivers were not the problem.  The card is spiking heat after being on for about 20 minutes.  The idle temp seems to be hanging out at about 70-75 degrees celcius.  The temp under load is going up to 85-90 degrees celcisu.  The airflow is good to the laptop and to all vents and my apartment is usually on the cold side so figure room temp is about 68 degrees F.  Its getting to the point that the card is basically useless for any 3d apps after 20 minutes or so.  Has anyone else had this problem?

If you go to notebook forums.com you will see that these cards do run hot. mine is idle at 50C and under load is 70 to 85. this is the norm for these cards.

Considering that Dell underclocks the GPU, I'm surprised at these temps.  I haven't had the opportunity to test mine during gaming but I'll check it out.  I'd expect these high temps though if one overclocked the card.

Laptop cards do run a little warmer than a desktop model, sure but to reach temps of 92 celcius while sitting idle is not right.  The artifacting is so bad now that 3d apps are completely useless.  This thing is a fire hazzard.  I'm contacting support tonight.... im not exited or happy about this.  Ive had this laptop for a week and its already not working right.

Underclock the cards?  How far are they underclocked?!?!  They sure didnt charge any less for the card.  This computer is turning into a nightmare.  First I lose 10gb to their stupid restore system.  The video card overheats and becomes useless.  Then the card isnt going to run at the right speeds anyway?!  I've had this pc for less than a week and I'm ready to ship it back to Dell.

Yeah, it's underclocked.... Read somewhere that it normally runs at 400 mhz but Dell underclocks it to 250.

I'd assume this is for two reasons - avoid sabotaging the XPS sales and also to reduce overheating issues (although, in your case, it apparently isn't working!)

I just cant believe it.  They sure charged me full price for the card.  Thanks for the info.  I contacted support and they ran a test... Says all is fine.  I had to disagree.  They are going to send me a new system.  So far this has been a MAJOR disappointment and an expensive one.  Guess my next call is going to be to customer service.
