That is interesting... Though I trust Jack from Badflash more. BIOS chips may differ on some motherboards.

that's a very handy website! the little plastic button that switches my screen off when the lid is closed broke off 12months ago (off my brand new 500m!). I never could be bothered fixing it (needed the laptop), and now I see I can do it myself.

that they're selling bios chips is also quite interesting!

cheers

wonder if a mod will come & delete this thread because in a way it bypasses bios security!

I guess the password isn't stored in the same chip as the BIOS. Is it?

No, it is on a separate chip soldered to the M'board. The bios chip will help folks who had bad BIOS Flash though.

Exactly, leduke30.  Too many wasted motherboards from a failed flash.  And the chip would be compatable because they are from 8000 motherboards.

hey, now I can replace the plastic on my 8200 with the one from the c840 and reduce the chassis flex.

Beware, some of those parts cost more than the part would from dell spare parts (the fan is $10 more, for example)

So this means if someone stole my computer they could buy one of these chips and switch them out and be able to get inside my computer?

No, the Passwords are stored on a chip soldered into the M'Board. While those are theoretically "swappable", how would you like to try soldering on a double-sided board? I used to solder components back in Vacuum Tube days to make Hi-Fi(MONO)amplifiers but I would not tackle that one.
