Mouse Pointer dissappears and keyboard locks up

I have a 14R Inspiron that I purchased last March.  Starting about a week ago, the mouse pointer just "disappears" and the keyboard is locked up.  Nothing responds (i.e. ctrl-alt-del)... I have to literally hold down the on./off key until it turns off.  There does not seem to be any pattern ... sometimes it happens after sitting awhile, other times, it happens as I'm using the computer .., all of a sudden the mouse pointer is missing.

I'm running windows 7, and have rolled the system back to a "pre-date" before this started - no improvement.

I'm also running norton antivirus - the system health is clean and "high"

I have run norton utilities - no problems there either

Uninstalled all "new" program downloaded in the last three weeks - no improvements.

PLEASE help .. any ideas welcome!

Did you install Windows 7 Service Pack 1 and/or IE9?

My laptop does the same thing ( 2 year old Vostro 3500 running Windows 7). When I try to run the windows update, it will not allow it to install the updates (several error messages). Any advice?

this may not help

but in my case I was losing the cursor - it would just stop responding ... and the only way to get it back was to reboot the computer ... to my embrassment I discovered one day I was accidentally pushing a key that locked the keyboard.

the windows update thing seems to be something i can't figure out ... some times it works, sometimes it doesn't.
