Mouse settings are lost when logging out

Hi, Have an Inspiron 9300.  Works fine.  Annoying problem is that some mouse settings don't stay set, and have to be re-set every time I log on.  Specifically: Under "Mouse properties", I select "Pointer Options".  When first logging on, the "Enhance pointer precision" box is unchecked and the pointer speed slidebar is halfway between Slow and Fast.  I check the "Enhance pointer precision" box and slide the pointer speed to "Fast". Perfect, just the way I like it.  I have to do this every time I log on, these two settings don't stick.  All my other mouse settings do stick.  System is XP SP2, Home edition.  Alps TouchPad driver is version 5.4.102.12, dated 11/16/2004.  Has been like this since the first day, not a new problem.

lol this is going to sound crazy and it may not work but it would be interesting to see if it works.....

Ok go into your Mouse settings and make sure they are set the way you want then

Click Start  then Run then type regedt32 then click the plus sign next to HKEY_USERS and then click on the Mouse folder........take note of the Mouse Speed and sensitivity etc

now click on the plus sign next to HKEY_CURRENT_USER and then click on the Mouse folder.....and take exact notes of whats in there for number values for speed and sensitivity......

(save a backup of your registry before doing this) If they are different.....then change the HKEY_USERS especially in speed and sensitivity to match exactly what the HKEY_CURRENT_USER is set to......

Im only thinkin that manually setting it in the registry then savin the registry configuration might just FORCE it into saving the settings   =D

Lemme know if it works.....thx

Hi again.  Thank you for your response and the good suggestion
to fiddle with the registry.  Unfortunately, it still doesn't
preserve the setting between logoffs/poweroffs.  Here's what I
did, per my understanding of your suggestion:

1. Prior to setting the mouse parameters I wanted, Regedit
indicated, in HKEY_CURRENT_USER\ControlPanel\Mouse, that
MouseSpeed=0 and MouseSensitivity=10.  This corresponds to the
"Enhance pointer precision" box = UNCHECKED, and the Pointer
Speed slidebar halfway between Slow and Fast.

2. After setting the two parameters to my desired settings,
Regedit indicated, in HKEY_CURRENT_USER\ControlPanel\Mouse, that
MouseSpeed=1 and MouseSensitivity=20.  This corresponds to the
"Enhance pointer precision" box = CHECKED, and the pointer speed
slidebar = Fast.

3. I found many instances of MouseSpeed and MouseSensitivity in
my registry.  I found these two parameters in these registry
locations:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\ControlPanel\Mouse
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Alps\Apoint\Params\Default

and

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Alps\Apoint\Params\Default
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Alps\Apoint_Default\Params\Default

and

HKEY_USERS\.DEFAULT\ControlPanel\Mouse

and, under various "uuu" values (uuu=18,19,20,21; as I have
multiple users on my machine)

HKEY_USERS\S-1-5-uuu\ControlPanel\Mouse
HKEY_USERS\S-1-5-uuu\Software\Alps\Apoint\Params\Default

4. In every place, I changed MouseSpeed from zero to one,
and MouseSensitivity from 10 to 20.

But still, whenever I logoff or poweroff, these two settings are
lost.

5. I initally tried just changing these parameters under
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\ControlPanel\Mouse and
HKEY_USERS\.DEFAULT\ControlPanel\Mouse and
HKEY_USERS\S-1-5-uuu\ControlPanel\Mouse.

When that failed, I further searched the registry and found the

*\SOFTWARE\Alps\Apoint* locations.

6. So it didn't work, but I much appreciate your suggestion.

nice.........lol

You had more patience to search around than I did.......what about making an entry in autoexec.bat (which I think still will execute commands...Im not sure) to edit the registry every time it boots up..............that would be tricky and even if autoexec.bat wouldnt work anymore, there has to be a way to script it to run every boot.............I found an editor for commands that might be useful built inside of windows but I havent played around with it for a bit..........I dunno maybe that'd be just something to tinker around with outta boredom one day.....lol

Quick update.  I uninstalled the Dell SetPoint Bluetooth software on my Laptop and it fixed the mystical mouse settings not saving after Logging off.

Hope this helps.

Good luck.

Where did you download these drivers? Any link?
I searched for download section in support - could not find them there.

Try this link:

It's the Set Point download for XP.  If you have a different OS, try searching in the downloads section for "setpoint".

Good luck.

I uninstalled setpoint software and things are looking good now.
I dont know why do we need that software at all other than telling when the bluetooth keyboard and mouse battery is running out.
