MpFilter.sys missing or corrupt

I have an Inspiron 1545.  When booting, I get an error message saying "mpfilter.sys" file is missing or corrupt.  I ran windows recovery environment,

and it stopped and gave me the same message.  Have tried restoring to earlier safe point and repairing.  I do not have

any installation disks.  How can I fix this?

Hi johnnycod,

This issue can be caused by a hardware failure or a software corruption. Since you have already tried running system restore and windows recovery environment, I will suggest you to run the diagnostics on your system to confirm hardware functionality. Below are the steps:

  • Restart your system and keep tapping “F12” as soon as the Dell logo appears.
  • Highlight “Diagnostics” using up and down arrow keys and press enter.
  • The diagnostics should initiate.
  • It will show up color bars. Press “Y” key to continue.
  • It the diagnostics fail, it will give an error code and the error message.
  • If the diagnostics pass, it will ask you “Do you want to run the remaining memory test”. Press “N”.

Please let me know if you get any error code and error message.

I am sending you a friend request followed by a private message. Please send me your system’s service tag to check the warranty status. In case the diagnostics pass, I can send across the disks to a US address, to repair your system. If you are outside US, we can factory restore your system.

Keep me posted. Please reply if you have any questions.

Hi johnnycod,

Since the diagnostics pass, I will suggest you to reset your system to the factory settings in order to fix the issue:-

Note: Please backup all your data as you will lose everything saved on your system. This includes all your pictures, music, documents etc.

1. Restart your system and keep tapping "F8" from the keyboard as soon as the Dell logo appears.
2.
Select "Repair your Computer".
3. Specify the language settings that you want, and then click 'Next'.
4. Log in as a user who has administrative credentials, and then click 'OK'.
5. Click 'Dell Factory Image Restore'.
6. In the 'Dell Factory Image Restore' window, click 'Next'. .
7. Click to select the 'Yes, reformat hard drive and restore system software to factory condition' check box.
8. Click 'Next'.
The computer is restored to the default factory configuration.
9. When the restore operation is completed, click 'Finish' to restart the computer.
The software is now installed as it was when the computer was first received.

Keep me posted. Please reply if you have any questions.
